Adhesion testing is performed as described in ASTM D3359-17. HAI® can therefore offer adhesion tests according to MIL-DTL-5541.
Grid cut adhesion test is a test method used to evaluate the adhesion between a coating and a substrate surface. The test is performed by applying a coating to a sample surface and allowing it to cure. A grid cut pattern is then cut into the coating so that it reaches down to the substrate. The grid cut pattern can vary, but the typical is a pattern with diagonal lines that cut through the coating and down into the substrate.
After the grid cut is cut, a piece of tape is applied to the coating, which is quickly torn off. If the coating detaches from the substrate, it will cause the coating to tear off in the grid cut pattern. This may indicate that the adhesion between the coating and the substrate is poor.
